Caracas claim record tenth title
Caracas were crowned Venezuelan champions for a record tenth time after thrashing Apertura winners Deportivo Italia 5-0 in the second leg of the championship final.
Seeking their first league title since 1999, Deportivo Italia held the Clausura winners to a 1-1 draw in the first leg last weekend. But Caracas took full control at Estadio Olimpico de la Universidad Central, racing out to a 3-0 lead within the first half-hour.
Franklin Lucena put Noel Sanvicente's side after eight minutes and Rafael Castellin extended the lead four minutes later before Alejandro Guerra netted a third in the 26th minute. Zamir Valoyes made it 4-0 nine minutes into the second half before Jose Manuel Rey rounded out the scoring with 15 minutes to go.
It was the sixth title this decade for Caracas who will now attempt to book their place in the Copa Libertadores semi-finals when they travel to Brazil to meet Gremio on 17 June with the tie delicately poised at 1-1.
