Hertha Berlin have extended the contract of midfielder Pal Dardai by a year, making him the longest-serving player at the club and giving him the opportunity to break the club's appearances record.

The 33-year-old is just 11 appearances short of Michael Sziedat's milestone of 280 matches for the Bundesliga club.

And general manager Dieter Hoeness hopes he will go on to pass that next season, which should also be his last as a professional footballer.

"We are delighted Pal will remain with the club," said Hoeness in a press release. "He has been here from the very beginning and we would be delighted if he were to take Michael Sziedat's record."

The Hungarian has been with Hertha since 1997. When his contract expires next summer, he has the option to play on another year with Hertha's reserve team before remaining with the club in another capacity.
