Celtic moved three points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a win over Kilmarnock as ten-man Rangers lost 1-0 to Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Ibrox.
An Ian Black penalty in injury time sealed a rare home defeat for the Gers as David Weir saw red for the foul which led to the spot-kick. A Scott McDonald double was enough to give Celtic a narrow 2-1 win away to Kilmarnock and return the reigning champions to the top of the league.
At Ibrox Rangers dominated but could not find a way past a stubborn Inverness side who are now one point ahead of Falkirk in the race to avoid the drop. Rangers manager Walter Smith said afterwards: "The game was frustrating in the sense we didn't reach the level of play we've done in the majority of games we've played this season. We didn't start the game well at all and didn't create that many opportunities for the amount of possession we had."
Inverness manager Terry Butcher said he was very proud of his players. "This result means a lot to the club and the recovery starts now. I'm very pleased as we lost three points on Saturday and this was a difficult match to bounce back in," Butcher said.
Rangers missed an early chance with little over a minute gone when Steven Davis played a delightful through ball into the box for Kris Boyd to chase. However, the striker uncharacteristically hesitated before shooting and his heavy first touch knocked the ball out of play. The visitors then had a miraculous escape when Sasa Papac's cross from the left took a wicked deflection which was heading in before defender Grant Munro acrobatically cleared it off the line in the 19th minute.
Kenny Miller thought he had given Rangers the lead after 29 minutes when he chested down a high ball in the box before finishing with a low angled drive past Ryan Esson but the striker's effort was ruled offside. Bosnian defender Papac came close in the 43rd minute when Esson made a reflex save from his cut-back after he did superbly to reach a Davis cross on the by-line when it looked to be heading out.
The second half started slowly with neither side creating any clear opportunities. Barry Ferguson couldn't direct his shot on target when he connected with a John Fleck cross in the box after 63 minutes. Soon after a vicious Papac free-kick from 25 yards looked like it was on target before it took a deflection off David Proctor and out for a corner.
Rangers threw on three attacking subs in the form of Kyle Lafferty, Steven Naismith and Aaron Niguez to try and break down the Inverness defence but it was Inverness who took the lead in injury time. Black calmly finished from the spot after Weir was sent off for bringing down Proctor to give Inverness three precious points in their battle against relegation.
At Rugby Park striker McDonald had given Celtic the lead when he curled the ball past Alan Combe from a Marc Crosas pass. Fellow Australian Danny Invincible finished from six yards to level it with Kilmarnock's first effort of the match. But a late goal from McDonald sealed the win for Celtic.
Hearts got a late winner to defeat Motherwell 2-1 at Tynecastle. Steven Fletcher gave Hibernian a 1-0 win over Hamilton at New Douglas Park.
