Ajax Cape Town click as hopefuls falter
Ajax Cape Town bounced back into the South African Premiership title race as the hopes of leaders SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows were jolted. A hat-trick from South Africa striker Mabhuti Khenyeza powered Ajax to a 4-1 home victory over bottom-of-the-table Bay United and ended a six-match winless streak.
Victory lifted the 'Urban Warriors' three places to third, level on points with Sundowns and five adrift of defending champions SuperSport with eight rounds left in the richest African national football league. After five consecutive wins, Sundowns have suffered an untimely loss of form under French coach Henri Michel with a weekend defeat at Bay followed by a 0-0 draw against mid-table visitors Free State Stars near Pretoria.
Botswana international Mogogi Gabonamong struck after only six mintues to earn Santos a shock 1-0 win at Moroka Swallows, suffering their second loss in a row. Mozambican Elias 'Domingues' Pelembe put SuperSport ahead on 20 minutes at AmaZulu, but Myron Shongwe and Dumisani Ngwenya scored during the second half to give the famous Durban club victory.
Title contenders Kaizer Chiefs host SuperSport on Saturday in the pick of an eight-match weekend programme and victory for the former would throw the race for the one-million-dollar first prize even more open.
