Nicaragua have never been to the FIFA World Cup™ finals. They have been involved in qualifying since the road to USA 1994, but had to wait until their Brazil 2014 campaign to notch their first two victories. Even then, this was still not enough to progress to the third round.
Under their new coaching regime, Los Pinoleros have wedded a more attacking approach to their existing tactical discipline. Their on-field talisman and captain is Juan Barrera, a skilful playmaker. An 8-0 aggregate victory over Anguilla in the first round of Russia 2018 qualifying has fuelled a sense of optimism about the future.
Appointed at the end of 2014, Henry Duarte is the former Director of Technical Development for the Costa Rican Football Association. He has had stints at ten top-flight clubs in his native Costa Rica, as well as two in Guatemala, and also boasts a wealth of experience in youth and university football. As such, in addition to coaching the senior team, he is also overseeing Nicaragua's national age-group sides.
