Qualification history
Though the Cayman Islands have never taken part in the finals of a FIFA competition, they have improved steadily since joining world football’s governing body in 1992. The best example of their upward trajectory was on display in qualifying for Russia 2018, where they were only just edged out by highly rated Belize in the opening series. The Cayman islanders, led by Cuban coach Alexander Gonzalez, survived the opening game with a goalless draw on the road, only to be undone on away goals after a 1-1 draw at home a few days later. It spelled the end of their run, but it hints at signs of better things to come in the future.
