Swaziland have proven themselves capable of springing a surprise. They beat Togo and drew Zambia in South Africa 2010 qualifying, and before USA 1994 they beat Zaire and drew Cameroon. In qualifying for Brazil 2014, the Swazis were no match for Congo DR, going behind in the 18th minute of the first match en route to an 8-2 aggregate defeat.
Although bordering South Africa, surprisingly few Swazi players play in the competitive PSL, and the Sihlangu Semnikati squad mostly consists of local-based players. The nucleus of the squad is being drawn from Royal Leopards, who enjoyed a highly successful campaign in the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup.
Harris Bulunga was first appointed caretaker in November 2013 when Belgian Valere Billen handed in his resignation less than two weeks before Swaziland were due to play a friendly against neighbouring South Africa. Although the hosts lost 3-0 to Bafana, Bulungu held on to the job and was made full-time in 2014. He previously coached Swazi clubs Umbelebele and Moneni Pirates.
9 – The total number of goals Swaziland have scored in 15 World Cup qualifying matches since they started trying to reach USA 1994.
