Saudi Arabia's team footballer Naser al-Shamrani (L) fights for the ball against Yemen's Hamada al-Zubairi

Qualification history
Yemen first pursued FIFA World Cup™ qualification during the USA 1994 campaign. Since then, a lack of experience has prevented them from competing with the heavyweights in the Asian Zone. During the qualifiers for Brazil 2014, the Middle Eastern side failed to negotiate a tricky second-round encounter with Iraq and thereby missed out on the third-round group stage again. In their attempts to reach Russia, Yemen saw off Pakistan in a difficult two-legged tie in the first round and were drawn into an admittedly tough-looking Group H. They managed to pick up just three points, in a solo victory against the Philippines, and finished bottom of the pool.
