Yemen first pursued FIFA World Cup™ qualification during the USA 1994 campaign. Since then, a lack of experience has prevented them from competing with the heavyweights in the Asian Zone. During the qualifiers for Brazil 2014, the Middle Eastern side failed to negotiate a tricky second-round encounter with Iraq and thereby missed out on the third-round group stage again.
After falling short of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, the Yemenis then registered two draws and one reverse at the 2014 Gulf Cup of Nations. In terms of morale and motivation, those improved results provided a springboard for a solid 3-1 aggregate victory over Pakistan in the first round of qualifiers for Russia 2018.
The position is currently vacant.
5 – This will be the fifth time that Yemen have played in a group stage during an Asian World Cup qualifying campaign, but they have not yet succeeded in booking a place in the final round.
