Qualification history
Vietnam's first experience of FIFA World Cup™ qualifying came ahead of USA 1994, with the preliminaries for Russia 2018 marking their seventh attempt at reaching the global extravaganza.

The team
The current squad features players from the team who finished semi-finalists in last year's AFF Championship. Spearheading the attack is 29-year-old Le Cong Vinh, arguably the country most talented goalscorer since the legendary Le Huynh Duc. Pulling the strings further back is the gifted Vu Minh Tuan, while versatile Nguyen Trong Hoang can be deployed as either second striker or midfielder.

The coach
Toshiya Miura was signed by Vietnamese FA with the tasks of coaching both the U-23 side and the senior national team in 2014 on the back of a series of notable achievements including taking Consadole Sapporo to Japanese League second division champions in 2007. He made a good start to his tenure by taking the junior side to the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship while guiding the senior team to the AFF Championship semi-finals.
