Qualification history
One of the founding members of AFC and once a powerhouse in Asia, Malaysia's record in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup™ remains unimpressive. They have participated in the preliminaries for each of the past 11 World Cups but have yet to progress to the final round. Their best performances came in their debut qualifying campaign for Germany 1974 when they drew against Korea Republic and edged past Thailand only to narrowly miss out a place in the decisive stage. That lacklustre record in World Cup qualifying continued on their road to Russia 2018, with the Harimau Malaysia picking up just four points in Group A, all of which came against Timor-Leste - the only side to finish below them.
