Qualification history
Laos are among Asia's less-experienced campaigners with just three FIFA World Cup qualifying appearances to their name. In their debut - the prelminaries for Korea/Japan 2002 - they were knocked out in the first round before again suffering early elimination on the road to Germany 2006. History was, however, made on the road to Brazil 2014 when they edged Cambodia 8-6 over two legs to clear the first hurdle. Their attempt to reach Russia 2018 started on a positive note, with a topsy-turvy 2-2 draw against Myanmar earning them a point in their opening game. However, it would prove to be the only point they would grab in Group G, with heavy defeats to runners up Lebanon and eventual group winners Korea Republic sealing their fate as the bottom side in the pool.
