Qualification history
One of Asia's lowest placed teams in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, Mongolia entered qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ seeking to progress beyond the first round for the first time, having suffered early exits in three previous qualifying attempts. Taking heart from their 1-0 qualifying victory against Myanmar at the same stage four years ago, the East Asians travelled to Timor-Leste confident of making history. There hopes were, however, all but shattered after losing 4-1 away, before a 1-0 home defeat consigned them to elimination.
