One of the smallest countries ever to take part in the preliminaries, Andorra have appeared in five world finals qualifying competitions since being admitted to FIFA in 1996. The Andorrans, whose only victory to date was a 1-0 defeat of FYR Macedonia in October 2004, lost all ten of their South Africa 2010 qualifying matches, a fate that befell them again in their Brazil 2014 group, when they also went goalless for the first time in a FIFA World Cup™ qualification campaign.
Andorra’s ability to compete on the international scene is hampered by the fact they have only a limited pool of players to choose from. Most of them are amateurs who play in neighbouring Spain’s lower leagues and hold down jobs away from football.
Capped 79 times by Andorra, former goalkeeper Koldo Alvarez hung up his gloves in 2009 and took on the job of national team coach in February the following year, since when he has sought to replace their traditionally defensive style with a more expansive brand of football.
