With football often taking a backseat to the nation’s more popular sport of baseball, Nicaragua have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup™ finals. In 2010 qualifying, the Central American upstarts lost both legs in the first stage to the Netherlands Antilles. They suffered a 1-0 loss on home soil in the first leg, and were beat 2-0 in Willemstad in the second. This time out, in qualifying for Brazil 2014, the Central Americans stumbled in the first group phase, finishing second in a section won by Panama, picking up six points from four games.
