Brazil extended their lead at the top of the South American #WCQ standings with a sixth-straight victory, as they saw off Peru in Lima with a pair of second-half goals. Uruguay lost pace with the frontrunners after falling 3-1 away to Chile, while Ecuador's 3-0 win over last-place Venezuela has them sitting third in the table heading into the New Year. Captain Lionel Messi led Argentina by example in an important 3-0 home win over Colombia. Bolivia further dented Paraguay's hopes of making Russia 2018 with a 1-0 victory in La Paz.

Costa Rica's fine start to the 'Hexagonal' stage of CONCACAF #WCQ sees them top the six-team standings heading into the New Year. Their 4-0 demolition of USA will be talked about in the region for some time. Mexico and Panama are on four points after a goalless draw in Panama City. Honduras bounced back from a home defeat to the Panamanians by defeating Trinidad & Tobago in San Pedro Sula. The Soca Warriors share the basement with the Stars and Stripes after their opening two matches.

A BITTER MOMENT FOR USA

USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann had this to say after the loss in San Jose:

"First and foremost, congratulations to Costa Rica for playing an outstanding game. They absolutely deserved to win and you have to give them credit. It's a bitter moment for us. We didn't imagine going into the hexagonal round with two defeats from the beginning. We knew it was going to be difficult with Mexico at home and Costa Rica away but obviously you want to have some points. This is a moment to reflect on what happened these last ten days. It's a bitter moment. We wanted to do far better than we did."

FT: PERU 0-2 BRAZIL

Tite's side march to a sixth straight World Cup qualifying victory in South America - thanks to second-half goals from Gabriel Jesus and Renato Augusto in Lima. They go four points clear at the top of the CONMEBOL standings after second-place Uruguay lost 3-1 in Chile earlier this evening.

A disappointing game in Panama City, as both sides end up sharing the spoils. One wonders if both sides will see this as an opportunity missed after USA succumbed to Costa Rica this evening.

FT: COSTA RICA 4-0 USA

History! Costa Rica defeat USA by the biggest margin in the two nations' history of World Cup qualifying encounters. It will be an unforgettable night for Los Ticos supporters, while it will be one Stars and Stripes fans will want to erase from memory. Johan Venegas gave Costa Rica the lead right before half-time with his near-post header. That goal seemed to give the hosts the momentum they needed and the floodgates opened after Christian Bolanos scored the second of the night and his second of 'The Hex'. Substitute Joel Campbell then scored two in goals in quick succession breaking through for two one-on-one finishes past Brad Guzan. USA simply had no solutions for Costa Rica tonight and start the Hexagonal round with two straight defeats for the first time since CONCACAF created the round. Costa Rica start Round 5 with two straight wins and now look forward to a visit to Mexico in March.

Gabriel Jesus makes the most of a fortunate bounce off a Peruvian defender to slot home with his right foot and put Brazil in front in Lima. Fine run into the home side's box by Liverpool's Phlippe Coutinho to set up the chance.

Goal! Bolanos scores in successive matches and it's similar to Costa Rica's first of the night. Bryan Ruiz beat his defender and sent in a cross with the outside of his foot and found Bolanos with a precise cross. Bolanos then headed past Guzan for Los Ticos to have a two-goal cushion.
