Qualification history
Brazil 2014 qualifying will be the Faroe Islands’ sixth attempt to reach the FIFA World Cup™, having first competed in the qualification tournament for USA 1994. After failing to register a single point on that occasion, the Faroes showed solid progression by finishing second-from-bottom in their qualifying group for the 1998 and 2002 tournaments. However, the islanders struggled in their next two attempts to reach football’s showpiece event and will be outsiders again this time.
The current crop
The Faroes have suffered similar problems in their qualification attempt for UEFA EURO 2012. Having shipped too many goals, their best result was a respectable 1-1 draw at home to Northern Ireland. With Italy, Slovenia and Serbia setting the pace, the Faroes will again have to use the experience as a learning curve.
The key players
The top goalscorers in the Faroes’ current squad are Rogvi Jacobsen and Christian Holst, and it was the latter whose goal earned his side a point against Northern Ireland.
