Qualification history
With cricket the invariably dominant sport, football in Sri Lanka is somewhat in the back seat. They may have emerged the regional victors in the 1995 SAFF (South Asian Football Federation) Championship, but their record at the continental level is far from satisfying. The South Asians have yet to reach the AFC Asian Cup finals and have never progressed beyond the first qualifying stage for the FIFA World Cup™ since 1994. Under South Korean Jang Jung, they entered Asia's preliminary opening round for Brazil 2014 seeking redemption. Having held Philippines to a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg, however, their world suddenly caved in at Manila in the return, conceding four unanswered goals to crash out 5-1 on aggregate.
