Qualification history
Despite being affiliated to FIFA as early as 1948, Pakistan did not participate in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifying competition until 1989, when they finished pointless in their bid for Italy 1990. They earned their first point during qualification for Korea/Japan 2002, courtesy of a hat-trick by Gohar Zaman in a 3-3 draw with neighbouring Bangladesh. However, that did little to change their status as continental underdogs, with Pakistan dumped out in Asia's campaign for South Africa 2010 following a 7-0 aggregate defeat to Iraq in the opening round. They continued to disappoint in qualifying for Brazil 2014, losing to Bangladesh 3-0 on aggregate to fall at the first hurdle yet again.
