Qualification history
Underdogs even in regional competition, it is no surprise that Chinese Taipei's quest to qualify for the FIFA World Cup™ has ended in failure, with the islanders yet to progress beyond the preliminary stage since 1978. In their attempt to reach Brazil 2014, they stunned Malaysia 3-2 in the second leg to draw the aggregate scoreline level at 4-4, only to be eliminated on away goals. Yet historically, on the continental stage at least, they can boast a proud record, having twice won gold at the Asian Games in 1954 and 1958, as well as finishing third and fourth respectively at the AFC Asian Cup in 1960 and 1968.
