Qualification history
A member of FIFA since 1994, Djibouti’s attempt to reach Korea/Japan 2002 was the east African side’s first-ever shot at qualifying for the world’s biggest sporting event. In the first round, a promising 1-1 draw at home to Congo DR was followed by a 9-1 second-leg collapse, precipitating the team’s exit from the tournament. Having not entered the 2006 qualifiers, the Djiboutians marked their return to the competition with an historic 1-0 victory over Somalia in the first round of the South Africa 2010 campaign. Unfortunately, the group stage proved a step too far for the diminutive nation, as they finished bottom of their pool, losing all six of their matches in the process. In the campaign to reach Brazil 2014, the Shoremen took on Namibia in a home-and-away tie, and they were physically outmatched and lost both legs to the painful tune of 4-0.
