Qualification history
Although the Seychelles formed an association in the late 1970s before joining FIFA in 1986, the island nation did not attempt to qualify for the FIFA World Cup™ until Korea Republic/Japan 2002. Things started off well enough with a home draw against Namibia, but they were overrun in the second leg by three goals. The story was similar four years later, but their conqueror was Zambia. In that case, they lost badly at home before earning a surprising 1-1 draw in the return. In qualifying for Africa’s first FIFA World Cup finals, The Pirates got their first taste of group action, but it was a disheartening experience as they lost all six matches. Qualifying for Brazil 2014 offered up another tall task for the Seychelles in the form of a home-and-away tie with Kenya, and the Harambee Stars proved too strong for the islanders, winning by a 7-0 aggregate score.
