Qualification history
In 1985, Madagascar came within two penalty kicks of beating African giants Egypt and causing one of the biggest upsets in FIFA World Cup™ qualifying history. Since then, the Bareas have never really looked capable of reaching the finals and have to content themselves with playing catch-up with the African elite. In qualifying for the 2014 finals, the islanders were part of an entertaining tie in which they lost the first leg to Equatorial Guinea 2-0 thanks to a pair of penalties for the home side and then went behind by a goal in the second leg. Despite needing four goals to overturn the result, Madagascar rallied and scored a pair of second half tallies to salvage a respectable 3-2 aggregate loss.
