They say that the best place for seeing Rio de Janeiro in all its glory is Niteroi, on the other side of the Baia de Guanabara. To get there take a boat from the centre of Rio or drive out along the Rio-Niteroi Bridge, which is 13 km long. The views Niteroi offers of the Cidade Maravilhosa are just one of its many attractions, however. An essential port of call is the Museu de Arte Contemporanea (MAC), designed by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Its beaches are also worth making the journey for and cater for virtually every taste. The best of them are Icarai, which looks out on to the bay and offers views of Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain, Camboinhas, with its 2,600 metres of fine, white sand, and Itacoatiara, a favourite haunt of surfers, surrounded by lush, green vegetation and flanked, like Camboinhas, by the Atlantic Ocean. There is no better way to round off your stay in Niteroi than by enjoying a meal at one of the many bars and restaurants on the Praia de Sao Francisco. There is plenty for night owls to do here, not least the chance to eat and drink on the shore of the bay and take in the nocturnal views of Rio.
