Suriname first took part in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifying phase prior to Chile 1962, and have now done so on a total of 13 occasions without yet reaching the showpiece tournament. However, the Suriboys have taken firm steps forward in recent years, culminating in their reaching Round 3 of North, Central America and Caribbean Zone qualifying for South Africa 2010. Drawn in Group 3 alongside Costa Rica, El Salvador and Haiti, Suriname drew twice with the latter but lost their other four encounters. This time out, in qualifying for Brazil 2014, they fell short of the mark again but only after finishing in third place in a group alongside El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and the Cayman Islands.
