Myanmar are now one of Asia’s least known sides, yet four decades ago they were among the continent's more competitive teams. They emerged surprise runners-up in the 1968 AFC Asian Cup, as well as twice winning gold in the Asian Games in 1966 and 1970. However, despite their proud history, Myanmar are among the least active nations in regards to FIFA World Cup™ qualifying. They had a disastrous campaign in their maiden attempt four years ago when they conceded eleven unanswered goals over two legs against China PR. They did, however, enjoy a measure of success in Asia’s opening qualifying round for Brazil 2014, edging Mongolia 2-1 on aggregate to set up a meeting with Oman in the second phase. Sadly, the West Asians proved too strong, winning 2-0 home and away to advance at Myanmar's expense.
