In a country where disruption due to volcanic activity has affected all aspects of everyday life, Montserrat’s hopes were not high when they started out on the qualifying trail for South Africa 2010. So it proved in the very first phase, when a 7-1 reverse at the hands of Suriname ended their dream of staying in the hunt for a first-ever FIFA World Cup™ appearance. In the preliminary qualification round for Brazil 2014, Montserrat’s path to the next phase was barred by Belize – who promptly racked up a 5-2 win in the first leg. With the odds stacked against them in the return match away from home, Montserrat battled bravely but still went down 3-1 to lose the tie 8-3 on aggregate.
