Jordan Morris’ late strike against Jamaica sparked scenes of jubilation among USA fans on Wednesday, as the Stars and Stripes lifted their sixth CONCACAF Gold Cup. On the back of Morris’ winner, we look back on one of the most famous goals in USA football history – Paul Caligiuri’s ‘shot heard round the world’.

Caligiuri’s goal against Trinidad and Tobago in November 1989 sealed USA’s return to the FIFA World Cup™ after a 40-year hiatus, and the CONCACAF giants have been ever-present at the global finals since. The USA icon recalls that celebrated strike in World Cup qualifying, as well as his memories of Italy 1990.
