Last month's FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers saw five teams join Japan, Australia, Korea Republic, Iran and hosts Brazil at next summer's finals. Dutch and Italian fans celebrated across Europe while USA, Costa Rica and Argentina supporters were jubilant across the Atlantic Ocean. Eight more teams can join the ten qualified sides and book their place to Brazil on Friday. FIFA.com takes a look at the scenarios required for next summer's World Cup to have more than half of its final line-up decided.
It's straightforward for Belgium, who will qualify if they secure at least a draw against Croatia in Group A. Germany and Switzerland have their World Cup fate in their own hands, they will each qualify with a win over Republic of Ireland and Albania respectively. Joachim Low's side will also qualify if Sweden fail to secure three points against Austria, regardless of the Nationalmannschaft result.
The Swiss will rely on other results if they draw or lose against Albania, with one point being enough to take them to Brazil if Group E rivals Iceland do not win against Cyprus. Ottmar Hitzfeld's side could even reach Brazil with defeat, if both Iceland and Slovenia (who play Norway) fail to win their games on Friday.
2018 World Cup hosts Russia will qualify if they win in Luxembourg and Portugal lose against Israel.
Honduras will reach their third World Cup if they beat already-qualified Costa Rica and Panama draw against Mexico.
Colombia have their fate in their own hands. A draw will be enough to see Radamel Falcao and co reach Brazil, while their opponents Chile will qualify with a win.
In the event of a Chile victory, and in a strange quirk of coincidence, Jorge Sampaoli's troops and Colombia could both qualify on Friday if the Ecuador-Uruguay match does not end in a draw.
On the other hand, if Uruguay win and Colombia beats Chile, both Colombia and Uruguay can book their flights to Brazil.
