The Colombian Football Federation announced on Thursday they have appointed former midfielder Leonel Alvarez as successor to Hernan Dario Gomez as national coach.

Alvarez was Gomez's assistant at July's Copa America in Argentina, then took temporary charge last month after Gomez resigned.

Alvarez played for Colombia at the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups™.

His first test will come next month when the Colombians embark on their Brazil 2014 qualifiers away to Bolivia.
