The countdown to Saturday evening's match for third place between Uruguay and Germany at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium featured a very emotional encounter between FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and Alejandra Forlan, the sister of Charrúa striker Diego.

Alejandra has been confined to a wheelchair since suffering a serious car accident in Uruguay in 1991. Since March 2009 she has chaired a foundation that bears her name and which provides support for road accident victims.

“It was a moment to remember,” said Alejandra after receiving the warmest of welcomes from the FIFA President. “I have always admired the work he has done in support of football,” she added before settling down to watch her brother in action against the Germans.

Although the Uruguayans went down to a 3-2 defeat, their top-four finish is their first in 40 years. The scorer of five goals at South Africa 2010, Forlan is in the running for a share of the adidas Golden Boot as well as the adidas Golden Ball, awarded to the player of the tournament.
