Twelve is the highest number of goals scored in a FIFA World Cup™ match, when Austria beat Switzerland 7-5 in the quarter-final in Lausanne in 1954.

The hosts had been three goals up after 20 minutes but Theodor Wagner struck a hat-trick to help Austria respond to secure an amazing victory and a semi-final date with West Germany.

Alfred Korner also struck twice, while Robert Ballaman scored three goals and Josef Hugi two for the Swiss. However, the Austrians' adventure ended in the last four as Germany FR ran out 6-1 winners en route to their first world title.
