Denmark striker Ebbe Sand scored the fastest FIFA World Cup™ goal by a substitute, netting 16 seconds after coming on against Nigeria at the 1998 edition in France.

Sand was introduced after 59 minutes and had an almost immediate impact, putting his side 3-1 up en route to a 4-1 victory in the last 16 match at the Stade de France.

Denmark were eliminated at the quarter-final stage, going down 3-2 to Brazil in Nantes. Sand retired in 2006, having scored 22 goals in 66 appearances for his country.
