Uruguay's Jose Batista holds the record for the fastest sending off in FIFA World Cup™ history when he was dismissed after 56-seconds against Scotland at Mexico 1986.
Victory for Sir Alex Ferguson's Scotland over Uruguay could have seen them progress to the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time. The Scots' chances were significantly boosted when Batista clattered through Scotland winger Gordon Strachan in the opening minute, receiving his marching orders for the offense.
Five more players were booked in what was an overly physical encounter. The match ended 0-0, sending Scotland home. Uruguay finished third in Group E behind Denmark and Germany FR and were beaten by eventual champions Argentina in the second round.
Scotland have yet to progress to the knockout stages of a major football championship and have not participated at a FIFA World Cup since France 98.
