Rudis Corrales scored a dramatic injury-time winner to lift El Salvador to a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in what could prove a damaging defeat for the Ticos in 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying.
El Salvador kept their slim hopes of reaching South Africa 2010 alive, and they cost Costa Rica valuable ground after the top four teams in the six-nation final-round group in North and Central America and the Caribbean had gone into the day separated by just one point.
At the end of Wednesday's matches, USA top the group on 16 points, followed by Mexico on 15, Honduras on 13 and Costa Rica on 12. El Salvador have eight points with two matches remaining, while Trinidad and Tobago, with five points, are eliminated with a 1-0 loss to USA.
The top three teams from the region advance directly into the FIFA World Cup finals, while the fourth-placed team play-off for a spot against the fifth-placed team from South America.
On 10 October, Costa Rica host Trinidad and Tobago, and they then travel to play the United States in Washington on 14 October. El Salvador are at Mexico on 10 October, and close their campaign hosting Honduras on 14 October.
