Adrian Mutu, who missed Fiorentina's Serie A game on Sunday with a muscular injury, has been named in Romania's squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifiers against France and Austria.
"I heard that he's had a few muscle problems but, as far as I know, he'll be fine for the match against France," said Romania coach Razvan Lucescu, whose side travel to meet France on Saturday before hosting Austria on 9 September.
Mutu remained on the bench for the duration of Fiorentina's 1-0 victory over Palermo on Sunday. The former Juventus forward also faces off-pitch problems, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a fine of over 17 million euros handed down to him as a punishment after he broke the terms of his contract at Chelsea by testing positive for cocaine.
I trust him to come through this situation. He's
already done so in even more difficult periods of his life by coming
back even stronger.
"I trust him to come through this situation," added Lucescu. "He's already done so in even more difficult periods of his life by coming back even stronger."
Romania's bid to reach next summer's tournament in South Africa was fatally undermined by three defeats in their opening six matches, but Lucescu expects his players to approach the game against France in a positive fashion.
"We're a young team with a new coach but also new players," he said. "For us it would be huge to play well and get a good result in Paris."
Usual first-choice goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont is not included in the squad due to an injury sustained in April.
