Jonas Gutierrez has pulled out of Argentina's squad for their upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup south Africa™ qualifiers against Brazil and Paraguay because of injury.

The Newcastle United midfielder tore a muscle in his right leg during the closing minutes of the Magpies' 4-3 Carling Cup victory over Huddersfield, and is now facing a spell on the sidelines.

"I felt a jab in the back side of the right thigh," Gutierrez said. "It hurt, but I kept playing the last few minutes. I cannot believe this is happening to me right now.

"I didn't realise the muscle was torn. It hurt in the dressing room, but yesterday morning, when doctors checked me out, it was confirmed. I have a grade-two tear."

I cannot believe this is happening to me right now.

Gutierrez will now fly to Buenos Aires to meet the national team doctors and get their assessment.

"I will travel [to Argentina] as soon as possible. I want to know what the doctors of the national team say," he said. Argentina coach Diego Maradona is expected to name a replacement in the next few days, with his team set to face Brazil on 5 September and Paraguay four days later.
