Zambia have handed recalls to former captain Misheck Lungu and long-forgotten defender Edwin Phiri for their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier in Egypt at the end of the month. The national team's French-born coach Herve Renard has named a preliminary squad for the Group C match in Cairo on 29 March.

Lungu last played for Zambia in 2005 when Senegal beat Zambia 1-0 away in Chililabombwe in a Germany 2006 qualifier. Phiri played two matches in the same campaign and is now with Swedish club Ljungskile while Lungu plays for Budapest-Honved in Hungary.

Renard has named 19 foreign-based players in the squad, but dropped former African Young Player of the Year Clifford Mulenga, who made a splash for Zambia at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. There are also eight players from the side of locally-based player who finished third at the CAF African Nations Championship in Côte d'Ivoire this month.
