Togo have appointed Jean Thissen as their coach as they prepare to qualify for the FIFA World Cup and the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2010.

He succeeds Frenchman Henri Stambouli, who resigned last September, and caretaker coach Kodjovi Mawuena, who led the Sparrowhawks to a 6-1 victory over Swaziland.

Thissen, 63, has coached in Belgium, France, Portugal and Switzerland and was also in charge of the Gabon as well asclubs in Morocco and Tunisia.

His first match as manager will be against Cameroon on 28 March.
