Frankie Hejduk's goal in the 88th minute allowed the United States to salvage a 2-2 draw at El Salvador on 28 March, lifting the US team atop the North, Central American and Caribbean qualifying table for 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The Salvadorans were just minutes from a victory that would have put them atop the table, but instead settled for a draw that left them level for fourth on two points with Trinidad and Tobago.\
El Salvador seized command on goals by Eliseo Ortiz Quintanilla in the 15th minute and Cristian Castillo in the 72nd. But Jozy Altidore pulled one back for the Americans on a header in the 77th minute and Hejduk netted the equalizer just two minutes from full time.
Brian Ching was denied twice late in the stoppage time, the latter off a defender's header from a bicycle kick. The draw, together with a 2-0 home win over Mexico, put the Americans in the lead with a home match on 1 April against Trinidad and Tobago.
