Bruno Metsu, who famously took Senegal to the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup™, quit as coach of the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, the UAE football federation announced.

The Frenchman stood down after the UAE lost both of their opening matches in the final Asian qualifying round for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. "Bruno Metsu presented his resignation and we will soon announce the name of his successor for the rest of the 2010 World Cup qualifying phase," said Mohamed al-Roumaithi, the president of the UAE football federation.

The UAE lost 2-1 to Korea DPR and to Saudi Arabia by the same scoreline earlier this month to leave the team in last place in the five-nation Group 2. Their next match will be in Korea DPR on 15 October. Metsu, 54, took charge of the UAE national team in June 2006 and won the Gulf Cup in January 2007.
