The surprise recall of captain Stephen Appiah to the Ghana squad for their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier against Libya in Tripoli has overshadowed the absence of his successor, the giant defender John Mensah.
Appiah has not played an international match since 1 December 2007, and he has struggled with a knee ligament injury that kept him out of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.
Mensah, known as ‘The Rock' for his defensive qualities, filled in as captain for the tournament and was recently signed by French champions Lyon. However, he is out of the game because of injury, as is Asamoah Gyan, who recently joined Rennes.
Friday's match is a key encounter for both sides. Ghana lead Libya on goal difference at the head of the Group 5 in African Zone qualifying. Both have nine points from four matches.
