Former Czech Republic boss Karel Bruckner is to take over as coach of Austria, the APA news agency reported on Friday.

Bruckner, 68, quit his post with the Czech Republic after their first round exit from last month's UEFA EURO 2008. He takes over from Austrian Josef Hickersberger, who also stepped aside after his side fell in the first round of European cup of nations.

The Austrian football fedeation (OFB) are set to officially unveil Bruckner at at press conference later Friday.

Bruckner will take charge of his first game on 20 August when Austria play a friendly against Italy in Nice, France.

His main focus will be qualifying Austria for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ with their first qualifier against France on 6 September in Vienna.

Bruckner coached the Czech Republic from 2001 to 2008, helping them to the semi-finals of EURO 2004 in Portugal.
