Thailand's football coach said Wednesday he has resigned after failing to get the national team through the first qualifying round for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Chanvit Phalajivin announced that he had submitted his resignation to the Football Association of Thailand on Tuesday, after a series of humiliating defeats left Thailand last in their group.

"I want to take responsibility," he said. "The fans do not believe in me."

Thailand failed to claim any victories in their six FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, earning just one point with a draw against Bahrain.

They lost all their other matches in the group, which pitted them against Japan, Oman and Bahrain.

The Thai team have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup.
