A 3-0 loss to Japan in last weekend's 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier was the last straw for the Oman Football Association (OFA), who have fired the coach of the national team, Uruguayan Julio Cesar Ribas.
Ribas will be replaced by local coach Hamad Al Azani for the return fixture against Japan on Saturday in Muscat. The Uruguayan's support staff have also been removed from their posts.
OFA Chairman, Sayyid Khalid Bin Hamad Bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, announced that the OFA had been dissatisfied with Ribas' preparation and tactics over the course of Oman's FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
"Oman's standard has gone down drastically," explained Al Busaidi.
Ribas lasted only six months in the position, having taken over from Argentine Gabriel Calderon in January.
