Brian Ching scored three goals to lead the USA past Barbados 8-0 on Sunday in the opening match of a two-leg 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying tie.
Ching scored in the 20th minute to give the hosts a 3-0 lead, and added the final two USA goals in the 86th and 89th minutes to complete the rout.
Clint Dempsey opened the scoring in the opening minute and found the net again in the 63rd, to the delight of a crowd of 11,476 in the home stadium of Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy.
Other USA goals came from Michael Bradley in the 12th minute, Landon Donovan in the 59th and Eddie Johnson in the 82nd.
The second leg of the series will be staged next Sunday at Bridgetown, but it will not be until next year that the continental representatives at South Africa 2010 will be known.
