Frenchman Alain Moizan has been named coach of Mauritania, the national football association confirmed on Monday.

The 54-year-old former France international was born in Senegal and coached Mali for part of their 2006 FIFA World Cup/CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign before being sacked for disappointing results.

His mission with minnows Mauritania is to take them past the second round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a difficult task as Morocco, Rwanda and Ethiopia are in the same group and only one team is guaranteed to advance.
