Despite twice hitting the woodwork, Luxembourg were unable to claim only their second FIFA World Cup™ qualifying victory at home to Moldova on Wednesday.
A game that had been quiet for long periods livened up in the second half, with the first serious chance of the game coming on 52 minutes, when a Joel Kitenge cross reached Alphonse Leweck in the middle, whose header came back off the bar. 17 minutes later the away side had their best opportunity of the night, Vitalie Bordian thumping in a free kick from 30 yards which was punched to safety by the Luxembourg keeper Jonathan Joubert.
The hosts again had a good chance to snatch the points in the 76th minute, when a corner from substitute Claudio Lombardelli was headed against the post by Luxembourg captain Jeff Strasser. The game petered away thereafter, leaving both teams ruing their missed opportunities.
Luxembourg move to four points, while Moldova gained their first point of the campaign. The two teams occupy the bottom two places in European Group 2.
