Angola survived a scare to beat Niger 3-1 and pip Uganda to the runners-up spot in Group 3 of African Zone qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The Cranes had put pressure on their rivals by edging Benin in their final second-stage game, but the Palancas Negras fought back in Luanda to finish above them due to a superior goal difference.
Malam Moussa's 20th-minute effort had sent Niger in 1-0 up at the break. However, an own goal by Daouda Kassali restored parity, and efforts from Gilberto and Ze Kalanga secured the victory for Angola.
Egypt clinched the Group 12 title and a spot in the final round with a 4-0 win over Djibouti. Emad Moteab gave the hosts all the scoring they needed in the 19th minute before Ahmed Hassan (50th minute) and Mohamed Aboutrika (66th minute) sealed the deal. Djibouti's Said Riyad scored an own goal two minutes into stoppage time.
Earlier, Uganda came from behind to overcome Benin 2-1 in Kampala. Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring for the visitors, who went into the game having already qualified for the final phase of African qualifying, in the 32nd minute.
However, Geogrey Massa made it 1-1 seven minutes after the restart and soon after, the 22-year-old forward sealed the win.
Elsewhere, Burkina Faso won 3-1 in Burundi to advance to the concluding phase as Group 9 winners. The result endured the Stallions finished three points above runners-up Tunisia.
Aristide Bance fired Burkina Faso ahead on 18 minutes, but Claude Nahimana levelled for the hosts two minutes before the break in Bujumbura.
However, the second half belonged to Moumouni Dagano, who scored twice to seal victory for Paulo Duarte's team. Burundi ended the four-team section in third.
Guinea emerged triumphant over Kenya in the battle to finish top of Group 2. The Kenyans went into the game with the luxury of needing only a draw, but they fell three goals behind following efforts by Ismael Bangoura, Mamadou Bah and Kamil Zayatte.
Late strikes by Francis Ouma and Kevin Opondo did haul Kenya to within a goal of holding on to pole position, but Guinea held on for the 3-2 victory.
