Germany's Reinhold Fanz was on Thursday named as coach of Cuba with the unlikely task of taking the country to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa.
"It's an interesting job and I'm very happy," said the 54-year-old who is strapped with a tough job in taking Cuba past their reputation as Caribbean giants but CONCACAF flops.
"Our objective is to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. The potential is there."
Cuba are 71 in the FIFA/Coca-Cola world ranking and haven't reached the FIFA World Cup finals since 1938.
